Baby Showers in Grandma’s Days What were baby showers like in grandma’s days? How did they differ from the baby showers of today? Night and day, chalk and cheese – these are two analogies that immediately come to mind. In grandma’s time, things were a lot more casual!This may sound crazy when you think that generally speaking, things have loosened up with time, and not gotten stiffer! But baby showers were definitely not so carefully planned and so elaborately decorated as they are today. There probably weren’t any invitations, there certainly weren’t gift registries andthe many traditions, which seem to be increasing constantly, didn’t exist.There probably weren’t any party favors, and the baby showers were almost certainly thrown in a private home. But the purpose was served! But the purpose of baby showers, the very essence that makes them what they are, was the same back then. It was a time for grandma, who was little more than a girl then, to take center stage, and spend a lovely afternoon with her friends, drinking tea, eating apple pie and opening piles of lovely presents. There weren’t so many things to choose from when deciding on the gift, and times were ever so much simpler, so baby showers were lovely relaxed tea parties for the girls. In a way it’s sad that the simplicity of the past has fade daway, and that baby showers have become such a commercial thing today. But no matter – the purpose is still met!
