Baby Showers in Germany It may surprise some people to hear this, but baby showers are not all that common in Germany. But they’re catching on slowly. It is justlike with Halloween which was barely known, and seldom celebrated in Germany as recently as recently as 20 years ago. The Germans do it like the Americans. Because the idea of baby showers has been adopted, there are no traditional German baby showers. A lot of the sitcoms and series broadcast on German television are American, and therefore, the “traditions” followed are rather similar to what they’ve seen on TV. But baby showers in Germany serve the same purpose as baby showers around the world – the mother to be gets lots of useful gifts that she will need when the baby arrives. The snacks are likely to be healthier. Generally speaking, the Germans do not eat as much sugar or fat as most other nations ofthe world, and the eats at baby showers are more likely to be low fat potato chips, cucumber or kohlrabi sticks, salt sticks and dips. Olives, cocktail tomatoes and mozzarella cheese are also favorites. There will be fruit juice,which most guests will mix with soda water, and towards the end of the party,there will almost certainly be cheesecake, apple cake and coffee and an assortment of fruit and herb teas. But when push comes to shove, baby showers are not that different in Germany than they are in the US.
